Animal Classification Quest

What if your child could classify an unfamiliar animal using the same system scientists use?

Animal Classification Quest takes your child beyond memorizing animal groups and into the actual process of scientific classification.

They will investigate real animals, compare biological traits, follow classification clues and learn how scientists determine where an organism belongs. Along the way, they will discover why a dolphin is a mammal rather than a fish, how a shark can be a fish while a whale is not, why the platypus belongs with mammals even though it lays eggs and what actually distinguishes an insect from a spider.

Through eight interactive investigations, your child will:

Identify the characteristics scientists use to classify animals
Distinguish vertebrates from invertebrates
Sort animals into their major scientific groups
Build and interpret branches of the tree of life
Use a real dichotomous key to identify an unfamiliar organism
Follow classification from kingdom through species
Work toward identifying an animal by its scientific name
Apply what they have learned to animals they have never classified before

This is more than learning a classification chart. Your child is learning how to think like a scientist.

By the end of the Quest, they will be able to take an unfamiliar animal, examine its characteristics and work through the evidence to determine where it belongs in the biological classification system.
